Tokyo Dawn Records continue to enhance their reputation as one of the best record labels putting out contemporary, forward looking soul. I’ve been listening to their exceptional compilation, The Heart Volume 2 for the past couple of months. It’s jam-packed with moving and intriguing cuts from a varied collection of artists including Colonel Red, Reggie B, Bobby, Amalia, Vindahl, Paul Mac Innes (under the name Psaul) Portformat, Diana Krall, Boom Clap Bachelors, Erik Rico & Marc Mac and even Diana Krall!
The Heart Volume 2 is undoubtedly one of those compilations that flows more cohesively from start to finish than the vast majority of single artist albums, despite its inherent variety of styles. In addition to the great artists compiled on The Heart Volume 2, its ‘curator’ Marc Wallowy (founder and label manager of Tokyo Dawn Records) deserves a special mention for, once again, delivering an album that stands out as something much more satisfying than just a collection of ‘hot’ tracks. The quality runs deep on this album, but I’ve plucked out a few of my personal faves to convey the unquestionable quality of the compilation.
