I Wanna Rise by Fingersnap (a new British soul duo made up of Guy Davies and David McAlmont) is an unpretentious soul-pop anthem ripe for the dour times we seem to find ourselves in. I’ve followed David’s career for many years and still consider his A Little Communication to be one of the best British soul albums ever recorded. He’s a fascinating character, capable of delivering outstanding soul music. I Wanna Rise should see his new venture with long-term songwriting partner, Guy Davies, attracting quite a bit of attention. Here in the UK, this track should be a shoe-in for the Radio 2 playlist. It deserves to be heard far and wide.

I Wanna Rise is reminiscent of David’s finest work with Bernard Butler, namely the Bring It Back album. It finds David and Guy working an uplifting groove, laden with stirring strings and a comforting Isleys vibe. As ever, David’s vocals are impassioned and electrifying, but care and attention has been given to the overall songwriting, delivering a wholly satisfying and enjoyable slice of soulful pop.

The upcoming EP is entitled ‘smokehouse’ and can be heard via the player on the duo’s new website, http://www.finger-snap.com/. It will be released on November 14th and contains enough diversity and accomplished songwriting across its four tracks to suggest that Fingersnap will become a firm fixture chez SoulCuts!
